The International Cricket Council ICC) has decided to move the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to the UAE due to civil unrest in the country.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was scheduled to take place from October 3rd-20th, 2024 in Bangladesh. But the civil and political unrest in the country forced ICC to shift the tournament to UAE.
The Bangladesh government made a final effort to host the tournament through the United Nations (UN), but countries like Australia, India, New Zealand and the United Kingdom had issued travel advisories to their citizens against traveling to Bangladesh.
“”I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible. However, they will retain hosting rights,” ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said in a statement.
It was reported that ICC was keen to host the tournament in India. But BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, denied the proposal by saying, “We’re in the monsoon and on top of that we will host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to give any kind of signals that I want to hold consecutive World Cups.”
The ten-team tournament will now be staged across two venues in the UAE- Dubai and Sharjah. Notably, the UAE has gained prominence as a cricket host nation in the recent past. The country have hosted many international and domestic tournaments. including the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup.
