Cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar launched ‘Khel Mahakumbh’ with BJP MP Anurag Thakur in the presence of 1500 athletes. The event aims at attracting participation of at least one lakh youth from Thakur’s Hamirpur constituency. The athletes will compete in volleyball, basketball, cricket, football, kabaddi and athletics.
Talking about the initiative, Tendulkar said: “Sports can indeed play a pivotal role in shaping lives and such initiatives help in reinforcing this by providing a platform to the budding talent.”
Rs 1 crore is expected to be invested in the project over the next five years. The registration will be done on grounds across Panchayats from 4th -20th May, 2018.
Thakur, who was ousted as the BCCI president by the Supreme Court in 2017, has designed this event in such a manner that it gives a fair selection for youths across 5000 villages and 800 Panchayats. “I firmly believe that sports has the power to shape personalities and contribute immensely towards the holistic growth of an individual,” said Thakur at the launch.
