In a historical and unprecedented decision taken by the state Cabinet, sport is now an industry in Mizoram. This clearly shows the state’s commitment towards holistic development of sports.
To give a boost to the sports sector in the state, the Mizoram Cabinet has granted industry status to sports. “We hope to attract more private companies to invest in sporting activities as Mizoram has evolved conducive sports eco-system,” Sports minister Robert Romawia Royte said after the cabinet cleared the proposal of the Sports and Youth Service department.
The sports minister claimed that Mizoram was the first state to grant industry status to sport. This decision will help in creating more jobs for local youths.
The state has produced several footballers who are playing in big football clubs in the rest of the country. Royte’s own football club, Aizawl FC won the I-League football in 2017. It is quite for sometime that the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and a few other big industrial bodies have been demanding industry status.
Sports and its infrastructure will be eligible for availing of subsidy, loan and assistance from private and government sources. The benefits will be multi-faceted. Corporate and private firms will have interests in supporting sports,” Royte further added.
