The highly anticipated first edition of the Kho Kho World Cup kicked off in Delhi with a spectacular opening ceremony and India’s victory in the first match.
The Indian Men’s team defeated Nepal 42-37 in the opening match of the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup at the iconic Indira Gandhi Stadium. The Indian players wrapped up Nepal’s first three defenders just 60 seconds into Turn 1.
Spearheaded by captain Pratik Waikar, India took a 14-point lead with three minutes remaining in Turn 1. Ramji Kashyap displayed brilliant flying jumps and Sachin Bhargo produced a spectacular skydive.
India will next play Brazil and the Indian Women’s team will start their campaign against South Korea in the Kho Kho World Cup.
Before the Group A clash in the Men’s section, a glittering opening ceremony set an electrifying tone for the tournament. The ceremony was a visual treat featuring mesmerizing sand art. The highlight was the unveiling of the dazzling Kho Kho World Cup trophy which drew cheers from the crowd.
The official mascots, Tejas and Tara, took centre stage, embodying the spirit of agility, teamwork, and resilience that defines the game. The ceremony also featured a vibrant athlete’s parade, showcasing the unity and competitive spirit of teams from around the world.
India’s hospitality was on full display as the foreign contingents were welcomed with thunderous applause. This event marked a historic milestone as India celebrated the global recognition of its traditional sport, Kho Kho.
The opening ceremony was attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, media mogul Rajat Sharma and wrestling legend Great Khali. Sudhanshu Mittal, President of the Kho Kho Federation, delivered an inspiring speech, reflecting on the sport’s evolution “from mud to mats.”
IOA President PT Usha was also present at the occasion. She highlighted the significance of traditional sports in international competitions. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya celebrated Kho Kho’s inclusion in the Asian Games and expressed hope for its future in the Olympics.
With the inaugural edition of the Kho Kho World Cup now underway, the world is eager to witness Kho Kho’s thrilling journey on the global stage.
