The Indian Men’s and Women’s teams are the champions in both the Open and Women’s section at the 45th Chess Olympiad.
The Indian Men’s team claimed the first gold medal in the last round of the 45th Chess Olympiad at Budapest in Hungary. India’s Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh secured wins for the team as second-placed China dropped points on two boards against the USA.
Gukesh won against Vladimir Fedoseev and Arjun Erigaisi claimed a win against Serbian Jan Subelj on the tournament’s final day. Praggnanandhaa also ended his campaign with a win.
The Indian team had an almost perfect run, starting with eight wins before being held to a draw by Uzbekistan, the defending champions. But India clinched the title by defeating the USA in the penultimate round.
The Indian women’s team defeated Azerbaijan in the final round to claim the twin gold. D Harika, Divya Deshmukh and Vantika Agarwal won their respective matches while R Vaishali finished with a draw.
The star of the Chess Olympiad for the women’s team was Divya Deshmukh who finished the tournament with a superb performance of 9.5 out of 11. On the men’s side, Arjun was on fire with 10 out of 11 and D Gukesh registered a phenomenal 9 out of 10.
