“Birth of an Athlete”- Seminar on development of sportsmen in India

Sportsavour and Poinsur Gymkhana recently organised a one-day sports seminar and panel discussion to celebrate National Sports Day.

The Birth of an Athlete- Factors influencing the making of a sportsman in India. Based on this topic a seminar was organised by Sportsavour and Poinsur Gymkhana.

The event was organized to celebrate National Sports Day and pay tribute to the legacy of our ‘Hockey Wizard’, Major Dhyan Chand.

In her opening speech, Poulomi Kundu, the Founder and editor of Sportsavour, mentioned the necessity of more children playing actual sports on the field. She said, “Children should spend at least 2 hours playing actual sport; whatever they like. Then only will our playing population rise, and it will be easier to identify and nurture talents.”

The event was graced by Pravin Thipsay- International Grandmaster, Gopal Shetty-Former Member of Parliament and PV Shetty-Former Secretary of Mumbai Cricket Association.

Pravin Thipsay acknowledged the progress made in providing facilities for athletes. He mentioned that now government as well as private organizations like Poinsur Gymkhana, have created opportunities for athletes.

In the panel discussion, the eminent panellists gave their powerful insight into the theme of the seminar. There were parents, sportsmen and government officials whose viewpoints provided a platform for diverse perspectives on the topic.

The panellists included Madhav Kamble-Assistant Director of SAI, NB Mote- Former Sports Director of Maharashtra, Jaya Shetty- Kabaddi player, Shweta Avadh- Fencing player, Manali Prabhu and Karunakar Shetty as parents.

The event also marked the launching of Khelo Mumbai Games- a path-breaking initiative to foster the growth of athletes by providing better facilities and organizing more competitions in the Maharashtra region.

Gopal Shetty highlighted the need for Mumbai to provide more athletes. He said, “I could not play much during my childhood due to financial reasons. But I always tried to develop sports for the betterment of the society. It is everyone’s duty to give back to society after they reach a certain position in life.”

Numerous office bearers pf various sports organizations like Kabaddi, Gymnastics, Mallakahmb, Karate, Boxing and Cricket attended the event.
