Erin Jackson ended medal drought for U.S.A. in Speed Skating by taking first place in the Women’s 500m Race at Beijing Winter Olympics 2020.
Erin Jackson, lovingly called Speedy by her teammates, secured the first medal for America in Speed Skating at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2020 and also the first individual Speed Skating medal won by an American since the 2010 Vancouver Games. The 500m is the shortest race in Speedskating with one straightaway lap and then a lap around the 400m oval.
Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland won gold in the Women’s Giant Slalom event at the Beijing Winter Games. Her compatriot, Marco Odermatt claimed the gold medal in the Men’s event with a combined time of 2:09.35 from the two runs. Zan Kranjec of Slovenia claimed silver after a superb second run and Mathieu Faivre of France claimed the bronze medal.
India made its 11th Winter Olympics appearance as Arif Khan took guard in Men’s Giant Slalom. The Jammu and Kashmir-born Indian skier finished 45th out of 89 participants with a time of 2:47.24.
Norway’s Marte Olsbu Roiseland won the 10km Pursuit Biathlon, taking home her third gold medal and fourth overall medal at the Beijing Games. Roiseland became the only woman to win four Biathlon medals at a single Olympics. Earlier she won gold in the Mixed Relay and Women’s Sprint and a bronze in the 15km.
The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) claimed gold in the Men’s 4x10km Cross country Relay. This marks the first time since 1980 that the gold medal was not won by either Norway, Sweden or Italy. Norway settled for the second position while France claimed the third position.
The Netherlands, led by Suzanne Schulting, claimed the Women’s 3,000m Relay gold with an Olympic record of 4:3.409 at the Beijing Winter Olympics. Consisting of Schulting, Selma Poutsma, Xandra Velzeboer and Yara van Kerkhof, the Netherlands lowered their own Olympic record. It is Schulting’s third medal of the Games and second gold.
Shaoang Liu of Hungary won the Men’s 500m in 40.338 seconds, giving his nation its first gold in an individual event at the Winter Games. Konstantin Ivliev from the ROC bagged the silver in 40.431 and Steven Dubois of Canada won the bronze.
