Mumbai-based Mallya Varadkar Friends recently organised a Senior Citizen Cricket tournament at Bordi in Maharashtra with almost one hundred and twenty 60+ cricketers.
in 2018, Mallya Varadkar Friends Team was formed by two senior citizen cricket enthusiasts. Ravindra Mallya and Shirish Varadkar intended to give opportunity for senior citizens in Borivali region of Mumbai to play cricket.
The members of the team were all passionate cricketers from childhood and throughout their youth. Even, during their professional life they continued playing for their office teams or corporate houses. They might not pursued cricket professionally, but the game has been their lifeline.
Hence, when they got a chance to play cricket after their retirement, they grabbed the opportunity to the fullest. Every day they gather on the ground for their cricket practice and also try to play tournaments as much as possible.
The Mallya Varadkar Friends organised the 60+ Senior Citizen Cricket Tournament at Bordi to meet like-minded cricketers of their age. There were teams from Surendranagar, Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Baroda.
There were seven teams in total with around 120 players participating in the tournament. Ravindra Mallya said, “There are many 50+ Senior Citizen cricket tournaments. But 60+ tournaments are comparatively less. We are all above 60 but never refrain from playing cricket. We all feel refreshed after playing tournaments.”
Mumbai Warriors led by Anil Bhalerao emerged as the winners of the tournament defeating the Rajkot team led by Rohit Bundela. Aslam Guru of the Mumbai Warriors was adjudged the Man of the Match. The Man of the Series award went to Umesh Manjrekar.
The two-day event was attended by N K Patil- the 92-year old social activist who has been a leader in the Bordi region of Maharashtra.
