29 medals- India’s historic Paralympic performance in Paris

India achieved its best-ever performance in Paralympic history at the Paris 2024 Games, securing 29 medals.

Seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze are India’s medal numbers at the Paris Paralympics 2024. India finished among the top 20 in Paris this time around. This performance surpassed the 19-medal haul from Tokyo 2020, which included five gold medals.

Highlights of Indian Performance

After a quiet first day at the Paris Paralympics, India started with a bang when Avani Lekhara won gold in 10m Air Rifle SHI Shooting. Avani became the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games, defending her title.

The superlative performance in Track and Field events contributed largely to India’s best-ever performance in the Paralympics. India recorded a one-two podium finish in  Athletics for the first time, with Dharambir and Parnav Soorma clinching gold and silver respectively in the Men’s Club Throw F51 event. Later, Praveen Kumar fetched another gold medal in the High Jump T64 event.

Ace athlete Sumit Antil made history as the first Indian man to defend his title at the Paralympics, winning gold in the Men’s Javelin throw F64. Sumit broke his previous record, set at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, thrice during the competition.

Mariyappan Thangavelu became the first Indian to win medals at three consecutive Paralympics. He won the gold medal at Rio 2016, silver at Tokyo 2020 and bronze at Paris 2024.

Preethi Pal secured India’s first-ever medal in a track event at the Paralympics. She won two bronze medals and became the only Indian to secure two medals at Paris Paralympics.

In Archery, armless wrestler Sheetal Devi made history as India’s youngest Paralympic medallist, securing bronze in the Mixed team event alongside Rakesh Kumar.

Later, India found their first-ever Paralympic archery champion in Harvinder Singh.
