India has won seven out of eight Women’s Asia Cup editions and remains the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
The Women’s Asia Cup was first played in 2004, much later that the Men’s Cup that initiated in 1980. The first edition was not a tournament, but a bilateral five-match ODI series played between India and Sri Lanka.
The next two editions were played among India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. In the fourth edition, Bangladesh made its debut.
The first four editions of the tournament were in the ODI format. But from 2012, the tournament is played in the T20I format. The 2012 edition was held in China. Host China alongside Hong Kong, Nepal and Thailand made their debut.
In 2016 and 2018, the number of participating teams were reduced to six. Malaysia made its debut in 2018. In 2022, there were seven participating teams with UAE making its debut.
This year’s edition is having eight teams, the second time in the history of the tournament. India qualified as defending champion and Sri Lanka as host. Alongside, Pakistan and Bangladesh qualified automatically by being full members of ICC.
India has completely dominated the Women’s Asia Cup because it has won seven out of eight editions. Only, in 2018, Bangladesh became champion by defeating India.
