India won a total of 6 gold, 5 silver, and 6 bronze to register their best-ever performance at the World Para Athletics Championships 2024.
In this edition of World Para Athletics Championships, India won a total of 17 medals, thus, overcoming the previous record of 10 medals won at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships in Paris.
Gold Medal Winners for India
Deepthi Jeevanji
Deepthi Jeevanji is the daughter of daily-wage labourer from Telangana’s Warangal who overcame financial hardships to reach the pinnacle of success.
Jeevanji bagged the gold medal at World Para Athletics Championships 2024 with a world record time of 55.07 seconds in the Women’s 400m T20 category Race. She broke the previous record of 55.12 seconds set by Breanna Clark of the US at the 2023 edition.
Sachin Khilari
Sachin Khilari fractured his left hand and falling from a bicycle when he was nine-years old. Despite the physical setback, he took up sports and started with Javelin and Discus Throw. But, a shoulder injury forced him to switch to Shot Put.
Khilari defended his title in the Men’s Shot Put F46 final with a new Asian record at World Para Athletics Championships 2024 in Kobe.
Mariyappan Thangavelu
Two-time Paralympics medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu clinched his maiden World Championships gold medal in Men’s T63 High Jump event at Kobe.
Additionally On his way to the gold medal, he broke previous championship record of 1.83m held by Sharad Kumar.
