World Football Day on May 25- Unanimously declared by the UN

United Nations (UN) recently adopted a resolution to proclaim World Football Day on May 25 worldwide.

Football- A global phenomenon

Football holds a unique position globally as it is one of the most powerful games to transcend national, cultural, and socio-economic boundaries. While promoting health and well-being, it has speaks the language of gender equality.

Football has an immense global appeal. It is simple, yet thrilling. The blend of athleticism, strategy, and teamwork make it the “People’s Game”. Subsequently, it unites people, fostering a sense of community and shared passion.

World Football Day- May 25

The first international football tournament took place in history on May 25, 1924, during the summer Olympic games held in Paris. It had representation of all regions Therefore, 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of this milestone.

The date also coincides with the decision taken in 1928 at Amsterdam to create the FIFA World Cup.

The UN’s General Assembly passed Resolution A/RES/78/281 proclaiming May 25 as World Football Day to mark this special occasion. The resolution was embraced unanimously by the 193-member General Assembly.

The resolution acknowledges “the global reach of football and its impact in various spheres, including commerce, peace and diplomacy, and recognizing that football creates a space for cooperation.”

It also recognizes “the fundamental role” of FIFA and the important role of regional and national soccer federations, in promoting the game.

FIFA and UN- Working together to promote the game

FIFA and UN are working closely together in recent years to promote peace and inclusivity through football, develop initiatives to impact society positively and improve the lives of millions of people. 

The UN agencies like the UNESCO, World Health Organization and UN Women used FIFA’s global platform to connect with billions of football fans during the FIFA World Cup 2022 and FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino launched the World Football Week from May 21-25 to celebrate this strong union. He said, “I am delighted we now have yet another reason to spread joy….and I am sure there will be other opportunities in the future, and FIFA- as always- will be a willing and enthusiastic partner.”
