On day 9 of the Hangzhou Asian Games, Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee won a historic first Women’s Doubles Table Tennis bronze for India.
India on Day 9
India continued to win medals in Athletics on Day 9 of the Hangzhou Asian Games. The 4x400m Mixed Relay team broke the national record, while the Speed Skating 3000m teams added two bronze to India’s medal tally.
The day started with the Indian Speed Skating Women’s team of Sanjana Bathula, Karthika Jagadeeswaran, Heeral Sadhu and Aarathy Kasthuri Raj winning the bronze in 3000m Relay. They scored 4:34.861 to win the nation’s first roller skating medal in Hangzhou. Soon after, their male counterparts- Aryan Pal, Anand Kumar, Siddhant and Vikram- managed to secure another bronze medal with a timing of 4:10.128. India’s total Asian Games medals in Roller Sports now stands at four. Anup Kumar Yama had won two bronze medals at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou- one in Men’s Freestyle and one in pairs with Avani Panchal.
The Indian pair Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee, though losing 4-3 against Cha Suyong and Pak Sugyong of DPR Korea, created history by bagging the first Women’s Doubles Asian Games medal in Table Tennis. This is India’s third medal in Table Tennis in Asian Games history. Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra had bagged bronze in the Mixed Doubles in the 2018 Asian Games while the men’s team also achieved the same feat in that edition.
In a scintillating Steeplechase of 3000m, India bagged silver and bronze. The Indian women Parul Chaudhary and Priti Lamba snatched second and third position respectively. Parul clocked 9:27.63 while Priti finished with a personal best of 9:43.32.
Then there was a silver jump from Ancy Sojan. In Women’s Long Jump, Ancy finished second with a best jump of 6.63m, which became his personal best. The other Indian in the event, Shaili Singh, finished fifth with a 6.48m jump.
It was a bronze to silver medal upgradation for India in Men’s 4x400m Mixed Relay. The quartet of Muhammas Ajmal, Vithya Ramraj, Rajesh Ramesh and Subha Venkatesan hadfinished behind Sri Lanka with a timing of 3:14.34s but Sri Lanka was later disqualified for violation of rule TR 17.3.1 which refers to lane infringement. Meanwhile, Vithya Ramraj clocked a personal best 55.42 seconds in the Women’s 400m Hurdles heats and secured direct qualification for the final. She equalled Indian track and field legend P T Usha’s national record in the category.
Highlights of Day 9
Japan clinched the Mixed Relay gold medal in Triathlon on Day 9 at Hangzhou Asian Games, marking their third consecutive victory in this event following triumphs at Incheon 2014 and Jakarta 2018. With this win, Japan swept all the three medals in Triathlon in this edition of the Asian Games.
20-year-old Kim Ilgyong of the DPR Korea broke the world record on her way to win the Women’s 59kg Weightlifting title at the Asian Games. Kim snatched 111kg, breaking the previous world record of 110kg set by Kuo Hsing-chun of Chinese Taipei in April 2021.
Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile Yavi defended her 3000m Steeplechase gold at the Asian Games with a timing of 9:18.28. Earlier, Winfred grabbed her first Hangzhou Asian Games gold in the Women’s 1500m in 4:11.65.
Japan’s Koki Ueyama overtook Saudi Arabia’s Abdullar Abkar Mohammed just meters from the finish to get the crown in the Men’s 200m Race at Hangzhou Asian Game. Ueyama won in 20.60 seconds, just 0.03 ahead of Mohammed.
China won gold in the Women’s Team Gold Medal Match of Go at the 19th Asian Games. Republic of Korea took silver and Japan clinched bronze. Go is an abstrach strategy board game for two players in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. The playing pieces are called stones.
Shanti Pereira ended Singapore’s 49-year wait for an Asian Games gold medal in Athletics when she won the Women’s 200m final on day 9. This is Pereira’s second medal in this year’s Asian Games after her 100m silver medal.
