History beckons as French referee Stephanie Frappart is set to become the first woman to take charge of a FIFA World Cup match when Costa Rica face Germany in the last round of group matches.

Stephanie Frappart, who officiated in two matches in the qualifiers of FIFA World Cup, has been appointed as the referee in Germany’s crucial clash against Costa Rica in the last round of group matches of World Cup. FIFA made this historic appointment along with two women as assistants to Frappart — Neuza Back of Brazil and Mexico’s Karen Diaz Medina. Thus, the 44th of the 64 games of this edition of World Cup will have an all-female refereeing team on the field for the match.

Frappart has officiated in six matches at the FIFA Women’s World Cup competitions in Canada in 2015 and in France in 2019. She was the fourth official in the 0-0 draw between Mexico and Poland that made her the first woman to occupy the role at a Men’s World Cup.

Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando Suarez said, ““It is difficult to reach the level she has reached. It is another positive step for football. It shows that football is for everyone.”

In this season, Frappart officiated in 13 matches across different competitions, awarding six penalties and 53 yellow cards.
