On day 7, Sudhir earned the first-ever Para Powerlifting Commonwealth gold medal for India, while Sreeshankar Murali won silver in Long Jump.
India won its sixth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham with Sudhir bagging it in Men’s Heavyweight Para Powerlifting. He failed to lift 217 kg in his final attempt, but finished at the top with 134.5 points. Sudhir defeated Nigeria’s Ikechukwu Obichukwu by 0.9 points in the final. He also created a new Games Record with his final score. This was India’s sixth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Earlier, Sreeshankar Murali won a historic silver medal in Men’s Long Jump. Sreeshankar’s medal is India’s second in Athletics after Tejaswin Shankar won the bronze in the Men’s High Jump the previous day. Sreeshankar and Laquarn Nairn of Bahamas were tied at 8.08m in the gold position. However, Nairn clinched the gold owing to a bigger second-highest jump of 7.98m, compared to Sreeshankar’s 7.84m.
Muhammed Anees finished fifth in the Long Jump event with his highest jump at 7.97m.
In Women’s 200m Heat, Hima Das won her heat event with a time of 23:42 and qualified for the semifinal.
In Boxing, Amit Panghal, Jasmine Lamboria, Sagar Ahalwat and Rohit Tokas assured India of more medals by making it to the semi-final events of their respective category.
In Squash, Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Saurav Ghosal entered the quarterfinals of Mixed Double swhile Joshna Chinappa and Harinder Sandhu bowed out in the round of 16. In the Men’s Doubles, Abhay and Velavan progressed to the next round.
Indian badminton stars P V Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen sailed into the Round of 16 in the singles events. Mix doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and B Sumeeth Reddy lost their opening match.
In Table Tennis, defending Women’s Singles champion Manika Batra won her opening match in straight games. Sanil Shetty/Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan/Sharath Kamal and qualified for the next round in Men’s Doubles. In the Mixed Doubles event, Sathiyan and Manika Batra qualified for the next round.
The Indian Men’s Hockey team beat Wales 4-1 to qualify for the semifinals.
