The India quartet of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey scripted history as they clinched the first-ever medal in the form of gold in Women’s Fours Lawn Bowl at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.
The Women’s Fours team of India won a historic gold medal in Lawn Bowl to give India its fourth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022. They defeated South Africa with the score 17-10. With this gold, the names of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey will forever remain in the history pf Indian sport.
India won the second gold medal of the day with the Men’s team beating Singapore 3-1 in the final of Table Tennis Team event. In the first match, the doubles pair of Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan won to give a 1-0 lead. However, Sharath Kamal lost to Zhe Yu Clarence to level the tie at 1-1. G Sathiyan overcame Yew En Pang while in the fourth match, Harmeet Desai clinically defeated Zhe Yu Clarence to win the gold medal for India.
Vikas Thakur won the silver medal in Men’s 96 kg Weightlifting after he failed to lift 198 kg in his final attempt.
The Indian Mixed badminton team comprising of P V Sindhu, Ashwini Ponappa, Gayatri Gopichand, Treesa Jolly, Aakarshi Kashyap, Kidambi Srikanth, Satwik Sairaj, Sumeeth Reddy, Lakshya Sen and Chirag Shetty lost to Malaysia 3-1 in the final to add a silver to India’s medal tally.
In the first match, the Indian doubles pair lost to Singapore in straight set. But P V Sindhu brought India back in the competition with a 2-0 win against Jin Wei Goh. However, Kidambi Srikanth could not live up to the expectation and was defeated by Tze Yong NG in the third match. In the final match of the event, Koong le Tan and Muralitharan Thinaah beat India’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and G. Gopichand.
India now has 13 medals with 5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze.
Rohit Tokas storms into the quarterfinals with a 5-0 win in Men’s over 63.5 kg-67 kg Boxing.
India’s Women’s Triples team lost 11-24 to England in Lawn Bowl whereas the Men’s Fours team won 14-11 against Fiji.
India’s Saurav Ghosal will play for the bronze medal after his 0-3 loss to New Zealand’s Paul Coll – the World No. 2.
Seema Punia and Navjeet Kaur Dhillon finish fifth and eighth respectively in Discus Throw finals.
Usha Bannur of India finished sixth in 90kg Women’s Weightlifting.
