Commonwealth Games 2022- On day 4, Emma Mckeon wins her 4th gold medal at Birmingham

With Emma Mckeon’s gold, Birmingham 2022 saw medals won in Gymnastics, Cycling, Table Tennis, Judo and Swimming.

Badminton

Malaysia and India will face each other in the final of the Mixed Team competition as Malaysia defeated England 3-0 and India defeated Singapore with a similar margin.

Basketball

Australia and Canada will fight for the gold medal in the final of Women’s Wheelchair Basketball. In the opening match of the day at Birmingham, Canada defeated Scotland 12-5. In the second match, Canada won 8-6 against England.

In Men’s Wheelchair Basketball, the same two teams will face each other as in the Women’s section. Australia and Canada set up a final tie in the men’s competition after wins over England and Malaysia respectively.

England set up a Men’s 3×3 Basketball final clash with Australia with a 13-12 win against Canada. Australia had earlier beaten Scotland 20-15 to seal their final spot.

England’s women’s team will face Canada as they defeated Australia 21-15. On the other hand, Canada defeated New Zealand 16-11.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Defending champions Australia beat South Africa 2-0 in Men’s Beach Volleyball match. England won against Cyprus by 2-0.

In the Women’s section, Rwanda edged a 2-1 win over the Maldives while Canada defeated Kenya with a 2-0 victory. New Zealand won against Ghana 2-0.

Boxing

St Lucia’s Arthur Langelier claimed a walkover victory over Leatialii Afoa of in the Men’s Light Heavyweight Over 75kg-80kg. Scotland’s Sean Lazzerini, Wales’ Taylor Bevan, Northern Ireland’s Jude Gallagher and Joseph Commey of Ghana all progressed to the next round.

Hockey

The match between India and England went for a draw as England dramatically came from behind twice, first from 3-0 and then from 4-1, to secure a 4-4 draw in the Men’s Pool B match. In Pool A South Africa recovered from 4-3 down entering the fourth quarter to win 5-4 against Scotland.

In women’s Pool A match, Wales defeated Ghana 4-0 and in women’s Pool B, Scotland had a thumping 11-0 victory against Kenya. 

Netball

Australia won their all three matches with a 74-49 victory over South Africa. Jamaica won with a big margin of 103-24 against Barbados. England beat Northern Ireland 71-27, while New Zealand defeated Malawi 69-50.

Squash

Defending champion Joelle King of New Zealand claimed a 2-1 victory over England’s Lucy Turmel in Women’s Singles. In the men’s competition, defending singles champion James Willstrop’s edged a 3-2 victory over Scotland’s Rory Stewart to reach the last four.

Medallists of Day 4

28-year-old, Australia’s Emma McKeon, who had already won gold in Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay, Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay and Women’s 50m Freestyle with silver in Women’s 100m Butterfly, also finished first in Women’s 50m Butterfly.

Kyle Chalmers claimed his first individual gold medal at the 2022 Games with victory in the men’s 100 metres Freestyle final. The Australian earlier won Men’s and Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay gold.

15-year old Summer McIntosh of Canada won her second gold of the Games and fourth in total with a win in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley.

South Africa’s Michaela Whitebooi defeated India’s Shushila Devi Likmabam to win Judo gold in the Women’s 48kg competition.

England’s Ashley McKenziewon Judo gold in 60kg as he defeated compatriot Samuel Hall. Vijay Kumar Yadav of India claimed the bronze medal.

England claimed two gold medals in Weightlifting. Chris Murray won gold in the men’s 81kg Weightlifting while Australia’s Kyle Bruce and Canadian Nicolas Vachon came second and third respectively.

Sarah Davies won gold in the Women’s 71kg after a combined lift of 229kg. Alexis Ashworth of Canada claimed silver while India’s Harjinder Kaur got bronze.

Singapore won their first gold medal at this year’s Commonwealth Games with victory over Malaysia in the Women’s Team Table Tennis.

Five-time Olympic champion, Laura Kenny won gold in Cycling Scratch Race. New Zealand’s Michaela Drummond and Canada’s Maggie Coles-Lyster finished with silver and bronze respectively.

20-year old Jake Jarman won his third gold at the Games as he won the Floor Exercise after his All-Round title and Team gold.

Team England celebrated gold in the Men’s Triples with a 14-12 victory over Australia.
