Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games 2022 at Birmingham was an action packed day as there were medals won in the Marathon, Weightlifting, Cycling, Artistic Gymnastics and Swimming.
Rugby Sevens
Australia stunned defending champion New Zealand in the Women’s Rugby Sevens to enter the final. New Zealand’s Men’s team, however, remained on course to defend their title in the men’s competition, making the semi-finals with a 31-0 win over Kenya.
Beach Volleyball
Australian Chris McHugh and Paul Burnett started their campaign with a 2-0 win over the Maldives. Rwanda and New Zealand also won their matches while England beat Tuvalu as the Pacific archipelago made its Games debut.
Cricket
England Women had a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka as the hosts played their first-ever match in Commonwealth Games. Suzie Bates scored an unbeaten 91 off just 64 balls to help New Zealand to a 13-run win over South Africa.
Table Tennis
Australia entered into the Women’s Team semi-finals with a 3-0 victory over Canada. Malaysia won against defending champions India to win 3-2. Singapore beat Guyana 3-0 to reach the semi finals and Wales progressed with a 3-0 win over England.
Indian men’s team progressed to the quarter-finals with a perfect record after a 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland.
Canada topped Group 4 with a 3-1 win over Malaysia. Bangladesh, Singapore and Cyprus also progressed to the last 8 stage.
Badminton
Defending mixed team champions India won against Sri Lanka 5-0.defeated Pakistan 3-2. Scotland and Canada won against Uganda and Maldives respectively.
England lost 4-1 to Singapore, while Malaysia thrashed South Africa 5-0.
Canada progressed after a 3-2 win over Scotland, who have also qualified.
Hockey
Team England had a thumping 12-0 triumph over Ghana in women’s Pool A.
Australia eased past Kenya 8-0, India beat Wales 3-1 and New Zealand beat Scotland 1-0.
In the men’s competition South Africa drew with Pakistan and Wales beat Canada 5-1.
Boxing
Nigeria’s Abdul-Afeez Osoba earned a knockout win over Carl Leviticus Hield of the Bahamas in the men’s Over 67kg round of 32. Merven Clair of Mauritius and Cyprus’ Rafail Pafiosalso won their respective matches.
England’s Jodie Charlotte Wilkinson beat Nigeria’s Bolanle Temitope Shogbamu in the Women’s Over 6kg round of 16.
Medallists of Day 2
Australia’s women’s team comprising of Madison Wilson, Shayna Jack, Mollie O’Callaghan and Emma McKeon comfortably won gold in the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle relay.
18-year-old Pieter Coetze of South Africa won the Men’s 100m Backstroke in a time of 53.78.
Reigning Olympic champion Maggie Mac Neil of Canada won a thrilling Women’s 100m Butterfly gold.
Australia’s Lewis Clareburt won Men’s 400m Individual Medley.
Scotland got their first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games this year through swimmer Duncan Scott. The Olympic medallist won clocked 1.45.02 in a star-studded men’s 200m freestyle.
South Africa’s Lara van Niekerk won Women’s 50m Breaststroke while Englishman Ben Proud won Men’s 50m Butterfly
England won Artistic Gymnastics team gold. Alice Kinsella and Georgia-Mae Fenton scored 13.900 and 13.150 respectively. Ondine Achampong recorded a score of 14.150 in the vault, and secured the title.
New Zealand track cyclist Ellesse Andrews won Commonwealth Games gold in Cycling Sprint final.
Her compatriot, track cyclist Bryony Botha won the Women’s 3000m Individual Pursuit final.
Aznil bin Bidin Muhamad of Malayasia defended his 61kg Weightlifting title in Birmingham with a Commonwealth Games record.
Aniq Kasdan of Malaysia won Men’s 55kg Weightlifting. India’s Sanket Sagar won the silver.
Mirabai Chanu won gold in Women’s Weightlifting 49kg.
Australia’s Jessica Stenson added Commonwealth Games gold to her previous two medals by winning the Women’s Marathon while Ugandan Victor Kiplangat won Men’s Marathon.
