Khelo India University Games- Ann Mariya breaks national record in Weightlifting

Ann Mariya sparkled in the 87+ kg Women’s Weightlifting event at the Khelo India University Games; Gajanan Shahadev Khandagale won three medals in Shooting.

Mangalore University’s Ann Mariya lifted 129kg to break Manpreet Kaur’s clean and Jerk national record (128kg) set at the Nationals in early 2022. However, she missed out on equalling her own Combined national record (231kg) set at the Nationals.

22-year-old shooter Gajanan Shahadev Khandagal, son of a chappal seller, won a full suit of medals in the 10m Air Rifle event- gold in Mixed Team, silver in Men’s team and bronze in individual at KIUG2021. Gajanan is from Talwada village in Beed, Maharashtra. There is no shooting range nearby and his parents had to sell their land to meet the expenses of Shooting. 

In the Men’s 4x100m Medley Swimming event, Anna University upset host Jain University — which counted on seasoned performers Srihari Nataraj and Siva Sridhar in its ranks — to clinch gold.

Her love for sports started from an early age when she played gully cricket and football for local teams. Academics and professional hazards sometimes took her away from her passion, but it never died in her. She always nurtured the never-ending dream.
