The 13th day of the Winter Olympics was action-packed with Kamila Valieva’s fall, Michel Gissin’s gold and Mikaela Shiffrin’s third DNF race.
Michelle Gissin retained her Olympic title in the Women’s Alpine Combined Slalom, ahead of her Swiss compatriot Wendy Holdener. Italy’s Federica Brignone finished in the bronze medal position. Mikaela Shiffrin was a strong favourite in the event but she finished for the third time at the Beijing Games with DNF – Did Not Finish – next to her name.
Russian Olympic Committee’s (ROC) Anna Shcherbakova captured the gold at the Women’s Single Skating event. The event was overshadowed by the doping controversy surrounding Kamila Valieva. However, Valieva, who was allowed to compete in the singles event despite failing a drug test last month, fell twice in her free skate finishing at No 4.
Sandra Naeslund captured gold for Team Sweden in Women’s Ski Cross. She claimed her first Olympic gold medal defeating Canada’s Marielle Thompson and Germany’s Daniela Maier who finished with silver and bronze respectively.
Japanese speed skater Miho Takagi won a gold medal in the Women’s 1,000 meters at the Beijing Olympics. Takagi, 27, scored a winning time of 1:13.19 seconds, setting a new Olympic record as well.
Canada beats U.S. 3-2 to win Women’s Ice Hockey gold at Beijing Olympics. Captain Marie-Philip Poulin scored twice, including her third gold-medal clinching goal. Sarah Nurse had a goal and assist in a game while goal keeper Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped 38 shots.
Norway won Olympic gold in the Nordic combined team competition led by four-time Olympic gold medalist Joergen Graabak.
