Dutee Chand becomes the first Indian to win gold in 100m at Summer University Games

Ace Indian sprinter Dutee Chand won gold in the Women’s 100-metre sprint at the 30th Summer University Games at Naples in Italy. This is the first time an Indian has won a 100-metre gold at this global event. She is also the winner of the first gold medal for India at this year’s event.

The 23-year-old had qualified for the finals with a 11.41s finish in the semifinal heats. Later she won the final by clocking 11.32s. Dutee has a season best of 11.26 seconds in the 100-metre discipline recorded at Doha in April 2019. Her personal best is 11.24 seconds. The Odisha sprinter was representing her university KIIT. “With years of hardwork and your blessings, I have yet again broken the record by winning the Gold in 100m dash in 11.32 seconds at The World University Games, Napoli. In the pictures, are the winners too, with a heart of Gold from Germany and Sweden,” tweeted Chand after her win.

Born in Chaka Gopalpur in Odisha to cotton weavers, Dutee Chand recently made up the headlines after she opened that she is in a same-sex relationship with a girl from her home town. After her win she posted a picture of herself with the gold medal and captioned it: “Pull me down, I will come back stronger!”
