Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian Javelin thrower to win an Asian Games gold medal and only the second athlete to win a Javelin medal in Asian Games after Gurtej Singh won a bronze in 1982.
20-year-old Neeraj threw 83.46 metres in his first attempt. He fouled the second attempt. But in his third attempt
he broke his own national record by clearing a distance of 88.06 metres.
Liu Qizhen of China won silver with a best throw of 82.22 metres while Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the bronze with a throw of 80.75 metres.
Chopra, the world junior record holder of 86.48, has consistently crossed the 85 metre mark this season. He clinched gold in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with a throw of 86.47 metres. Next, at Doha, during the first leg of Diamond League series he threw 87.43 metres.
