Vinesh Phogat carried the legacy forward. 23-year old Vinesh won the final bout of Women’s 50 kg Freestyle Wrestling by 6-2 against Irie Yuki of Japan. This is the first-ever gold medal for India in Wrestling at the Asian Games.
After her success in the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, Vinesh repeated her good form and commanded over Irie to win the match.
“That’s a true sign of a champion. You give them any stage and they come out the best of all,” twitted Neeraj Chopra, another gold medal contender in the Games.
This is India’s second gold in Jakarta. The first gold came through the hands of Bajrang Punia and that too in Wrestling.
