Formidable show by Indian wrestlers- Vinesh Phogat, Sumit Malik win gold, bronze by Sakshi Malik, Somveer Kadian

The Indian wrestlers continued their good form in international events by winning four medals today at the Commonwealth Games 2018. The cousin of the Phogat sisters, Vinesh Phogat kept the family traadition of winning gold at the CWG by winning in the Women’s 50kg Freestyle title. Vinesh outdid Canada’s Jessica Macdonald with a 13-3 scoreline to defend her gold medal.

However, Sumit Malik got a walkover win in the Men’s 125kg Freestyle event after his opponent did not turn out owing to an injury. But Sumit too remained unbeaten enroute to his gold medal match. He won three straight group matches in his event.

Olympic bronze medallist, Sakshi Malik, took home a bronze medal in the 62kg Freestyle event. Sakshi had bad losses in her first two bouts but came back with an improved performance in her bronze medal contest. Sakshi’s brother-in-law, Somveer Kadian defeated Canada’s Alexander Moore 7-3 to win bronze in men’s 86kg freestyle.
