Another medal from the shooting range for India. Tejaswini Sawant won silver in the women’s 50m prone finals. Tejaswini won the silver with a total point of 618.9, fewer than 3 points than gold medallist Martina Lindsay Veloso of Singapore.
Competing in her third Commonwealth Games, Tejaswini added the 6th Coomenwealth Games medal after having won gold in 10m Air Rifle and 10m Air Rifle (Pairs) in Melbourne 2006, a silver and two bronze medals in 50m Rifle Prone, 50m Rifle 3 Positions and 50m Rifle Prone (Pairs) respectively in New Delhi 2010. With this win, she became the first Indian woman to win this medal twice at the Commonwealth Games. The only other Indian to win a medal in this event was Roopa Unnikrishnan, who won Gold in Kuala Lumpur 1998.
India ended the day with Seema Punia’s silver and Navjeet Dhillon’s bronze in Discuss Throw. Seema threw 60.41m in her first attempt that turned out be her best effort out of six attempts. But Navjeet, who was at fourth spot behind New Zealand’s Sositina Hakeai, registered a throw of 57.43m in her sixth and last attempt to push herself to the bronze medal position.
This is Seema’s fourth medal overall at the Commonwealth Games after winning silver, bronze and silver in 2006, 2010 and 2014 respectively.
