Sushil Kumar became the first Indian wrestler to win three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. Sushil won against South Africa’s Johannes Botha in the 74 kg final by technical superiority in just 80 seconds. This is Sushil’s third gold after winning it in 66kg in Delhi 2010 and in 74kg in Glasgow 2014. He is also the only Indian to win two
medals at the Olympics.
Earlier, Rahul Aware won India’s first gold in wrestling at this edition after defeating Canada’s Steven Takahashi 3-1 in the 57kg final. This was Rahul’s first Commonwealth appearance and he debuted in style.
Babita Kumari Phogat earned her third Commonwealth medal in silver colour after losing to Canada’s Diana Weicker in the final of the 53 kg category. Babita had won a silver in 51kg in Delhi 2010 and gold in Glasgow 2014 in 55kg.
Wrestler Kiran added another medal to India’s tally by winning bronze in the 76 kg category after defeating Mauritius’ Katouskia Pariadhaven by fall as she led 10-0 within the first two minutes.
