ROBERT PITCAIR’N DREAM DEBUT
Canadian fullbore shooter Robert Pitcairn, became the oldest athlete in Commonwealth Games history when he debuted in the Queen’s Prize Pairs finals 1 event at the age of 79 years and 9 months. Pitcairn partnered with Nicole Rossignol for the event, broke the record held by Lawn Bowls player Doreen Flanders. Pitcairn and Rossignol finished in eighth place in the pair’s event with a score of 579-49.
ISSAC MAKWALA WINS IN 400m
Isaac Makwala claimed the 3rd gold medal for Botswana by winning in the Men’s 400m final. Makwala clocked a time of 44.35. His compatriot Baboloki Thebe claimed the silver giving Botswana its 4th medal. Jamaica’s Javon Francis settled for the bronze.
GRENADA GET DECATHLON GOLD
Lindon Victor of Grenada surprised everyone in the last four events of Men’s Decathlon to win the gold for Grenada. Victor had strong discus and javelin throws to finish with a total point of 8303 points. Defending champion Canada’s Damian Warner had to withdraw from the race due to injury.
NIGERIA RULE IN PARA POWERLIFTING
Nigeria claimed all four gold medals in Para Powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2018. In the first of the events, Roland Ezuruike won gold in Men’s Lightweight lifting 194kg to give him 224.3 points. In the Women’s division, world-record holder in 50kg class, Esther Oyema broke her own record with a solid third lift of 131kg. Oyema claimed her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal with a total of 141.6 points. Lucy Ejike held the world record in the women’s 61kg class and finished with a silver.
Ndidi Nwosu won her gold by a big margin in Women’s Heavyweight competition raising a best lift of 120kg at 69kg bodyweight. The Men’s Heavyweight competition was won by Abdulazeez Ibrahim. He had a narrow win margin ahead of against Malaysia’s Yee Khie Jong with both powerlifters having a best bench press of 220kg. But Ibrahim’s bodyweight which was 3.7kg less than Jong’s won him the gold.
India’s Sachin Chaudhary twice pressed out 201kg but his lifts were rejected twice. However Chaudhury managed his third and final attempt at 201kg to secure the bronze with 181.0 points.
INDIA’S GOLD NO 3 IN SHOOTING
Heena Sidhu gave India its third gold in shooting and the eleventh overall by winning the 25m Air Pistol event. Heena Sidhu won the gold by finishing with a new Games record of 38 points.
