18-year old weightlifting sensation Deepak Lather won bronze in 69kg category in his debut year in Commonwealth Games. With this India won 4 medals in Weightlifting- Mirabai Chanu and Sanjita Chanu won gold and Gururaja Poojary won silver.
Deepak Lather began the competition with 132 kg in Snatch and completed it in style. Next he lifted 136kg but failed in his third attempt to lift 138 kg. He finished the Snatch with 136 points.
In Clean and Jerk, Deepak started with a superb lift of 155kg. Next he successfully attempted 159kg. But he was unable in his third attempt of 162kg. He finished with a total score of 295. Gareth Evans o Wales took the gold and Indika Mudiyanselage won the silver.
Haryana lifter, Deepak, hails from Shadipur, a small village lying along Rohtak-Jind state highway. His father is a farmer and Deepak quite strong from his childhood. To help his father, he lifted sacks of cut-fodder on his back quite easily. Deepak is now one of the brightest prospect in Men’s Weightlifting for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
