Gold Coast Day 1: World Champion Sally Pearson pulls out; Mirabai Chanu gives India the first gold

Australia’s 100m hurdles World Champion, Sally Pearson, has officially withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games 2018 due to an Achilles injury. Pearson stated that her Achilles injury came back while training at the Athletes’ Village two days ago. The Olympic, two-time world and dual Commonwealth Games hurdles gold medallist made the announcement in front of the media.

FLORA DUFFY WINS FIRST GOLD

World No.1 and Women’s Triathlon favourite Flora Duffy claimed the first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games 2018 at Southport Broadwater Parklands. She finished in a time of 56:50 seconds. It was also Bermuda’s first ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Jessica Learmonth of England claimed silver and Joanna Brown of Canada won the bronze.

JAKE BRITWHISTLE WINS FOR THE HOST

Jake Birtwhistle claimed silver in the Men’s Triathlon to win Australia’s first medal of the Games. Birtwhistle finished just 7 seconds behind gold medallist Henri Schoeman.

SCHOEMAN GIVES SOUH AFRICA FIRST TRIATHLON GOLD

Olympic bronze medal winner Henri Schoeman won the gold in Men’s Triathlon to give South Africa it first gold in the event. Scotland’s Marc Austin claimed bronze.

MIRABAI CHANU CREATES RECORD IN WEIGHTLIFTING
Mirabai Chanu

India’s Mirabai Chanu won gold in the women’s 48kg weightlifting, setting a new Commonwealth Games record with a total lift of 196kg. The 23-year-old who won silver at the Glasgow 2014, was devastated after not being qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics. This gold, however, gave Chanu the much needed confidence before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Mauritius’ Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa took silver, while Sri Lanka’s Dinusha Gomes claimed bronze.

WORLD RECORD IN WOMEN’S BLIND AND VISION IMPAIRED SPRINT

England’s Sophie Thornhill set a world record in the women’s blind & vision impaired sprint qualifying at the first event of track cycling. Double world champion Thornhill recorded 10.609 seconds to overcome Australia’s Jessica Gallagher’s time of 10.954.

TAYLOR RUCK’S THRILLING FINISH

In a thrilling 200m Freestyle final, Canada’s Taylor Ruck overcame Ariarne Titmus of Australia to win gold for his country. Both the swimmers are 17-years old and they are considered to be the future rivals in world events. Australian record holder Emma McKeon claimed the bronze medal.

AUSTRALIA RELAY TEAM CREATES NEW POOL WORLD RECORD

Australia broke its own world record in winning the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay. Australian quartet of Shayna Jack, Bronte Campbell, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell finished in record time of 3:30.05 seconds, lowering the previous record by 0.6 seconds. Canada claimed silver in 3:33.92 and England in 3:38.40 took the bronze.

IZHAR AHMAD SETS THE FIRST COMMONWEALTH RECORD

Muhammad Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad of Malayasia set the first Commonwealth record of this year’s Games with a winning total of 261kg in the Men’s 56kg Weightlifting. Izhar Ahmad’s third clean and jerk of 144kg secured the record. India’s Gururaja Poojary claimed silver and Sri Lanka’s Chaturanga Lakmal claimed bronze.
