1996
A really unlucky 13 for cricket in India. It was the World Cup semi-final in Calcutta and cricket saw one of its worst affairs. The match between India and Sri Lanka was mired by the outrage caused by spectators. As Indian wickets crumbled for 120 for 8 chasing a total of 252, the crowd set fire to areas of the stands and started to pelt the fielders with fruit and water bottles. Players had to leave the field and the play could not start again. The ugly riot forced Clive Lloyd, the match referee, to abandon the game and declare Sri Lanka winners by default.
2004
India played their first ODI on Paakistan’s soil after 15 long years. India piled up a huge 349 that was brilliantly chased by Inzamam-ul-Haq (122) and Yousuf Youhana (73). But Moin Khan failed to do a Javed Miandad act and was caught off the last ball trying to hit the six Pakistan needed to win. India won the game.
