Marit Bjoergen of Norway became the most medalled Winter Olympian of all as she took bronze in Women’s Cross Country Team Sprint along with her team mate Maiken Caspersen Falla. That was Marit’s 14th medal, seven of them are gold, surpassing the 13-medal haul of her biathlete compatriot, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen. She needs one win to match his tally of eight gold that can be accomplished by her this year at the 30km Classic Mass Start event. The American duo of Jessica Diggins and Kikkan Randall clocked 15.56.47 to win gold medal in Cross Country for their country since Bill Koch took silver in the 30km race in Innsbruck more than 40 years ago. Their Swede rival, Stina Nilsson and Charlotte Kalla won the silver.
World No 1 Sofia Goggia from Italy won the Alpine Skiing Downhill gold followed by Ragnhild Mowinckel from Norway, who won silver and Lindsey Vonn from the USA, who won bronze. Goggia became the first Italian woman to win a downhill Olympic gold.
Canada’s Brady Leman, who won silver in Freestyle Skiing Men’s Ski Cross at Sochi 2014, won gold this year in the event. The on-form man in the final, Marc Bischofberger from Switzerland, who won two World Cup this season was the man in form. But he could not overtake Leman and has to settle for the silver. Sergey Ridzik, representing Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR), got the bronze.
The Finnish Women’s Hockey team won the bronze by defeating Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) team by 3-2 in the Women’s Ice Hockey. Petra Niemenen, Susanna Tapani and Linda Valimaki scored the three goals for Finland. The two goals for OAR team was scored by Olga Sosina and Lyudmila Belyakova. The gold medal match will be played between Canada and the USA .
Before Norway missed the gold in Women’s Cross Country Sprint, the men’s team comprising of Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo won the Sprint Free final to claim gold. It was Norway’s second gold in the event, following their victory at Vancouver 2010. The Norwegians came home 1.71 seconds ahead of Team OAR comprising of Denis Spitsov and Alexander Bolshunov. They won the silver. The Swedish pair of Marcus Hellner and Calle Halfvarsson won the bronze.
Mariama Jamanka of Germany won gold in her Olympic debut as she won the Two Woman Bobsleigh title partnering with Lisa Buckwitz. This is Germany’s first medal in the event since Turin 2006. Current World No 1 Elana Meyers Taylor of the USA and her team mate Lauren Gibbs won the silver. Two-time defending champion Kaillie Humphries of Canada and her partner Phylicia George took bronze.
Norway claimed yet another gold medal when they skated to Men’s Team Pursuit gold at Pyeongchang 2018. The trio of Harvard Bokko, Simen Spieler Nilsen and Sverre Lunde Pedersen 3:37.32 to win by 1.2 seconds to win over the Republic of Korea team comprising of Lee Seung-hoon, Chung Jae-won and Kim Min-seok. World record holder and defending champion, The Netherlands, who were defeated by Norway in the semifinal won the bronze. The trio of Patrick Roest, Sven Kramer and Jan Blokhuijsen beat New Zealand in the Final B to claim the bronze.
The Women’s Speed Skating Team Pursuit gold was taken by Japan in an Olympic record time of two minutes 53.89. The trio of Miho Takagi, Ayano Sato and Nana Takagi stopped the reign of the Dutch in skating by pushing the trio of Lotte van Beek, Ireen Wust and Antoinette de Jong to the silver medal position. The USA team of Heather Bergsma, Brittany Bowe and Mia Manganello finished with the bronze medal.
