Fazal Mahmood, Pakistan’s first world-class quick bowler, was born on this day. He took 139 wickets in 34 Test matches. His best performance came at The Oval in 1954 against England. he took 6 for 53 and 6 for 46 in Pakistan’s first win over England.
1977
Joel Garner and Colin Croft, the destructive pace duo of West Indies made their debut against Pakistan in Barbados. They shared 13 wickets among themselves.
1986
In the first ODI between England and West Indies at Sabina Park, a ball from Malcolm Marshall hit the nose of Mike Gatting who was batting with a helmet with no visor. The ball not only hit his nose but it bowled him too. Marshall later found a piece of bone embedded in the ball.
1996
Kenya played their first ODI. The match was against India in Cuttack during their World Cup campaign. Steve Tikolo scored 65 in their 199. Then Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja took the game away with a 163-run opening stand.
2014
Brendon McCullum became the first New Zealand cricketer to score a triple century. He made 302 against India in Wellington and won the match for his nation.
