Day 9: Norway’s Men’s team followed their female counterparts to take gold in 4x10km Relay

Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo led Norway to victory

The Men’s team of Norway, led by Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo, won the gold in 4x10km Relay following their female counterparts who clinched the yellow metal two days before. Thus, Norway became the first nation to win both the men’s and women’s events at a single Olympic Winter Games for a second time, after  Grenoble 1968. Klaebo secured a record-equalling fifth gold in eight Cross Country Skiing events when he took Norway to victory against Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) who claimed silver for his team and France who took bronze.

Oystein Braaten

Another victory for Norway came when Oystein Braaten took gold in the Men’s Freestyle Skiing Slopestyle.  This is Braaten’s first Olympic gold after claimng two Winter X Games golds in Slopestyle. Nick Goepper of USA clinched the silver and the bronze went to  Alex Beaulieu-Marchand of Canada.

Marcel Hirscher

After claiming gold in Men‘s Alpine Combined, Marcel Hirscher of Austria won his second gold medal at PyeongChang 2018 by finishing first in Alpine Skiing Giant Slalom clocking a combined time of 2:18.04. He was 1.27 seconds ahead of Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway, who won silver and Alexis Pinturault from France who claimed bronze. Hirscher recovered from injury in 2017 to resume his dominance of the World Cup circuit. He is the winner of the last six overall World Cup titles.

Martin Fourcade

It was another gold for Martin Fourcade of France after his title in 12.5km Men’s Biathlon. Fourcade won the Men’s 15km Mass Start surpassing the reigning world champion Simon Schempp of Germany. This is Fourcade’s first gold in Mass Start after consecutive silvers at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014. Schempp’s fellow German Erik Lesser claimed the bronze. All three missed shots, however, Lesser missed it twice to leave Fourcade and Schempp to battle it out for gold. Schempp kept the pressure on Fourcade but he failed to beat the French.

Oleksandr Abramenko

It was the first gold for Ukraine at Pyeonchang 2018 when Oleksandr Abramenko won the Freestyle Skiing glory in the Men’s Aerials. He performed a Back Full-Full-Double Full jump, one of the best jumps of his life, that earned him 128.51 points to lead him to victory. Jia Zongyang of China came in second and Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) Ilia Burov came in third.

Nao Kodaira

Nao Kodaira of Japan created an Olympic record of 36.94 to claim 500m gold in Speed Skating. Earlier she won silver in 1,000m Speed Skating event. Her victory made her the first female Japanese speed skater to win a gold in Olympic individual Speed Skating. Defending Olympic champion and world record holder Lee Sang-hwa of the Republic of Korea claimed silver while Karolina Erbanova of the Czech Republic took the bronze.
