Saurav Ghosal, the National Champion in squash, clinched the Vedanta Indian Open Squash after a playing brilliantly in the final hours of the final match against No 2 seed Nicolas Mueller of Switzerland. Top seeded Ghoshal won 11-9 5-11 6-11 11-7 12-10 in the 67-minute final. This is the second crown at home in four months on the Professional Squash Association tour for the 14th-ranked player.
Mueller had beaten Ghosal in three straight games in January, 2017 in the Tournament of Champions in USA. But after that, the 31-year-old Indian won twice against him- at the CCI International event in November 2017 ans again this time.
“Today neither of us deserved to lose. It was a great match. We entertained the crowd. Both of us fought clean in the way we played. I am happy I came out on tops but congratulations to Nicky for the way he played,” said the Indian champion after his title win.
The Swiss lost the opening game but came back strongly with his drop shots to lead 2-1. Ghosal fought back tremendously to make it 2-2. The deciding fifth game saw both players not leaving an inch to each other but Ghosal won it with his rallies and punishing shots.
