Mary Kom, Pwilao Basumatary and Lovlina Borgohain won gold in the women’s segment while Sanjeet and Manish Kaushik won gold in the men’s section at the India Open international boxing tournament.
Pwilao Basumatary was the first among the Indian women to win a gold. The former world and Asian bronze medallist claimed a 3-2 win over Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee in 64 kg category. Former world champion Mary Kom won against Josie Gabuco of the Philippines 4-1 to bag her gold in the 48kg class. Another Assam boxer, Lovlina Borgohain claimed the welterweight gold in 69 kg by defeating compatriot Pooja. L Sarita Devi settled for a silver medal in 60 kg after losing to Finland’s Olympic bronze-medallist Mira Potkenon.
On the final day of the India Open, in the men’s draw, Sanjeet picked up India’s first gold of the day when he upstaged Uzbekistan’s Sanjar Tursunov in 91 kg. National champion Manish Kaushik was given a walkover by his Mongolian rival Battumur Misheelt in 60kg. Asian Games bronze-medallist Satish Kumar however, settled for a silver, outwitted by Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalolov in a split 4-1 decision in +91 kg category.
