1925
Abdul Kardar, Pakistan’s first Test captain, was born on this day. He led Pakistan in their first 23 Tests. Kardar was a left-hand batsman and low left-arm bowler who led Pakistan to the famous victory at The Oval in 1954 against England.
1926
Clyde Walcott, the glorious batsman for West Indies, was born on this day. He was the one of the ‘Three Deadly Ws’ for West Indies-the other two were Everton Weekes and Frank Worrell. Between 1953 and 1955 Walcott made ten centuries in 12 Tests, including five of them in one series against Australia. He later became an ICC match referee, but had the misfortune of being sacked. He died in 2006, aged 80, and was buried alongside Frank Worrell at a site that overlooks the cricket ground named in their honour.
2008
Anil Kumble reached the 600 wicket mark after Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. With the dismissal of Andrew Symonds at Perth, Kumble joined the elite club.
2016
Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson recorded the largest stand in T20I for any wicket. Guptill made 87 and Williamson 72 in their run chase of 169 and added a record 171 in 17.4 overs against Pakistan in Hamilton.
