Indian wrestlers had a good time at Johannesburg as they won 59 medals in the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships held in the South African city. The Indian freestyle wrestling team won 10 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medal in the overall tally of 29 gold, 24 silver and 6 bronze.
Returning to the international circuit after more than 3 years, India’s double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar won gold in the 74kg freestyle category by defeating New Zealand’s Akash Khullar via a pin-fall in the final. Parveen Rana won the bronze in the same category. “Its a very proud and emotional moment for me as I have returned to the mat on international level after a gap of three years. I want to dedicate this gold medal to my Guru and to my Nation. Jai Hind,” tweeted Sushil Kumar after the win.
Besides Sushil, another Olympic medal winner, Sakshi Malik clinched a gold medal in 62kg women’s freestyle category. Sakshi defeated New Zealand’s Tayla Tauhine to win the gold.
