Eric Tindill, an extraordinary sportsman for New Zealand was born on this day. Tindill is the only man to play Test cricket and rugby, as well as becoming a Test umpire and international rugby referee. He made his Test cricket debut in 1936 against England and kept wicket in five matches of a career interrupted by the Second World War.

Bill Ponsford, the first batsman to have scored two quadruple-centuries in first-class cricket broke his own world record of 429 on this day. He hit 437 for Victoria against Queensland in Melbourne. It was Brian Lara who broke Ponsford’s record

Usman Khawaja, a Pakistan-born Australian player, was born on this day. Usman made his Test debut in Sydney against England in 2011. Batting at No. 3 in place of the injured Ricky Ponting, he made an impressive 37 and 21, but he did not have a consistent international career. He was in and out of the team.
