The use of the word ‘Bodyline’, was started from this day. After the first Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Hugh Buggy, a reporter of Melbourne Age, used the phrase ‘body-line bowling’. Ray Robinson, the sub-editor of the tabloid, shortened it to ‘Bodyline’.
1979
Abdul Razzaq, the in-swinger bowler and a useful No 7 batsman, was born on this day. The Pakistani became the youngest man to take a Test hat-trick against Sri Lanka in Galle in 1999-2000. He was also a member of the Pakistan side that won the World T20 crown in 2009.
1945
Alan Thomson, the first man to take a one-day international wicket, was born on this day. The Aussie, better known by the nickname of ‘Froggy’ had made only one ode-day international appearance. Thomson took the wicket of Geoff Boycott caught by Bill Lawry at the MCG. Thomson played four Tests against England.
