Desmond Haynes became only the fourth batsman to be given out for handling the ball in Tests, in the fourth Test between India and West Indies, in Bombay. The West Indian could not resist handling a ball from Kapil Dev that was rolling towards the stumps.
1986
Suresh Raina, a prolific batsman in the shorter version of the game, was born on this day. The Indian had a memorable Asia Cup in June 2008 where he scored two centuries, including his highest, 116 against Bangladesh. But Raina has to wait for long to get a test cap and after playing 98 ODIs he was given a chance in Test in 2010. He scored a hundred and two half-centuries in his first three Tests against Sri Lanka and Australia. But Raina can never cement his place in the national side. Presently he is not featuring in any format of the game.
1993
India won the Hero Cup final in Calcutta on this day. India gave a target of 226 to the West Indies. But the score that seemed to be totally achievable, went away from their hands as Anil Kumble produced a gem of a bowling spell. He took 6 for 12, the best ODI figures by an Indian, with all his wickets coming at a cost of four runs in a 26-ball spell. A crowd estimated at close to 100,000 remains a world record for any day’s cricket.
2014
Phillip Hughes , the promising young cricketer, died at the age of 25 after being struck by a bouncer on the side of his head. The Aussie was playing a first-class match in Sydney when he was hit while attempting a hook. He was rushed to the hospital but died in spite of an operation. His funeral was conducted on 3rd December in his hometown, Macksville, which was attended by cricketers and dignitaries including the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
2015
Souh Africa’s 15-series undefeated streak away from home stretched for almost 9 years came to an end when India took an unassailable 2-0 series lead in Nagpur.
