Aurther Chipperfield, the first man to make 99 on his Test debut, was born on this day. The Australian achieved the feat on the second day of the first Test against England at Trent Bridge in 1934. Chipperfield scored his Test century against South Africa in Durban in 1935-36.
1923
Bert Sutcliffe, the finest left-hander of his generation, was born on this day. The New Zealander played 42 Tests between 1946 and 1965 but without winning any of the tests. He scored his maiden Test ton against England in the tour of 1949. Sutcliffe was named one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1950.
1928
Colin McDonald, one of the skillful opening batsman, was born on this day. The Australian faced the new balls of the likes of Fred Trueman and Wes Hall. McDonald was the top-scorer in both innings of the famous match when Jim Laker of England took 19 wickets at Old Trafford in 1956. He made nearly half Australia’s runs in that game.

Javed Miandad, the prolific batsman, celebrated his 100th one-day international by making his 3000th run against West Indies in Multan.
1988
New Zealand, during the first test in their tour of India, had to field a record five substitutes, including a TV commentator (former captain Jeremy Coney) and a journalist as almost half their team was struck down by a virus.
2007
Adam Gilchrist the wicketkeeper-batsman was the first to reach 100 career sixes in Test cricket. During his unbeaten 67 against Sri Lanka in the second Test in Hobart, Gilchrist hit his 99th and 100th six over midwicket off consecutive deliveries from Muttiah Muralitharan.
