Jimmy Adams, a phenomenal batsman at the beginning of his career, was born on this day. The Jamaican batsman had an average of 81.07 after 12 Tests. Only Don Bradman had a better record than his at an average of 87. But Adams at the end of his 54 Test playing career, finished at an average of 41.26 by accumulating 3012 runs. His highest Test score came against New Zealand when he scored 208*. Adams was one of the most unsuccessful captain in cricket history. Given the captaincy when Brian Lara resigned it, he led West Indies to two rather streaky series wins but then went on to become the first player to captain a Test team to seven consecutive defeats.

Shaun Pollock made his ODI debut against England in Cape Town. His all-round brilliant performance of gave South Africa a win. He scored a run-a-ball 66 after South Africa was staggering at 107 for 6 wickets. In the second half he took 4 wickets for 34 runs.

Romesh Kaluwitharana the pinch-hitter of Sri Lanka, first opened the innings with Sanath Jayasurya. He paid off the experimentation of his side and slammed 77 runs. Sri Lanka continued with this very successful opening partnership and won the World Cup in 1996.
